Flutterby Paper Piecing & Mixed Media

Carmen Lucero is an artist who creates beautiful mixed media artwork on canvas. She is also a cancer survivor and created this special canvas for her Oncology department.

She was so kind to share the photo with us and I have enjoyed gazing at it, discovering new things each time I open it to look. We knew we just had to share this with our readers.

There's a lot to explore in this piece of art. Carmen said, "I painted the background with acrylics . It's a forest scene with mountains and a road in the foreground. I then used several different kinds of media to finish it up; more acrylic paint, stamps, rub-ons and different textures." The little girl in the front is is actual paper piecing of Flutterby, a recent Tiddly Inks pattern at MyScrapChick. There's many positive words here and there and one message reads...

Happiness is like a butterfly,
when you go after it
it goes away...
but when you stand still...
it comes to you.

Carmen displays her art in a local cafe and this particular canvas has already sold. Easy to understand why. She says she's working on more, particularly one she's already titled Hope. And we Hope we get a glimpse of her future art. Beautiful! Thank you Carmen.

We were really happy to be part of a challenge on the Make the Cut forum. Thank you to all the lovely ladies (and many helpful kids) who participated in this fun project.

Jan. 6-14, 2012 challenge featured the designs of myscrapchick. The winner of the challenge was "Beanie". She gets to go shopping on MyScrapChick's site and pick out $10 in product downloads.

Beanie submitted this cute beachy 2 page layout using the Beach Bears . There were also many other great creations posted for this challenge and you can see the photos below
and also on the MTC forum.

Im-A-Cutter/Trish did 2 versions of the Butterfly Bug card with an inspirational Bible on the inside. Beautiful cards. She also did a lot of the work in putting this challenge together and we really appreciate it. Thank you Trish.

Nicole Stebbins made a simple 4" Valentine card with a layered bee on the front
and a 3D balloon inside.

Gloria made a box card using the ladybug. Her grandson assembled it for her. We think he did a really top notch job. Very well done.

HappyCrafter "rounded out the right side of the butterfly's wing. Then printed the outline of the butterfly. I cut the body and glued it on and then popped the face and the middle part with glue dots and cut the cheeks and the highlights on the wings in glitter. The inside of the card says "and warm gentle hugs".

StampinPat05 - Pat says "Here is my first attempt at a challenge and posting a picture. I made a sticky note holder from the Lady Bug Critter Book set." We think she did a fantastic job, never would have guessed it was a first.

This cute lady bug card and these "Love Struck" birds were posted by GlitteryLadyBug.

Boxerloon submitted these beautiful tea lights. She said "I just couldn't help but turn these guys into a cute glass etching pattern. I want to use them with tea lights out on my lanai, what better companions that dragonflies and butterflies in the garden." Love them!

Paper clips! - Nelda and DianainNM did these really fun paper clips.

Rebecca got some very talented help from her 9 year old daughter to create the red bumble bee with sparkly hearts on it's wings. Ohegranny used the cute puppy from our Tiddly Inks Hope pattern.

Karen P used some different colors for the lady bug shape card. Darlene did the bumble bee and gave him hand-drawn polka dotted wings. Love that.

Miss May turned the bugs into finger puppets. How fun!
Ruth Gillis choose the reindeer from the Winter Faces to create her card.

Becky used all 4 designs from the Bug Cards on one beautiful card. Way to go Becky.
Reba went for a very artsy look with the dragonfly card. Love the colors and texture.

Pumpkin Treat Box

Who can resist candy? Make your house the most popular stop on Halloween with treat boxes and wraps. I plan to make up some cute boxes for the girls at the post office and latte stand. Here's a snapshot of what I've got planned...

I'm using the Pumpkin Treat Box from the Dollar Downloads (it was a freebie friday pattern last year). This was super easy to cut and put together. One sheet of textured orange cardstock for the box and I LOVE glitter so had to use yellow glittered cardstock for the mouth and back of eyes.

I inked around the edges of things and made a quick tag with a scallop and circle punch. The lettering is hand-done because it's quick to do, and I love quick and easy projects. Safeway has big bags of mixed candy on sale and it doesn't take a lot to make this guy look like he's loaded with sweet treats.

I love giving handmade gifts. Hey, I think this turned out cute enough to earn some double punches from the girls at the latte stand! That was easy...Fun! Fun!

Paper Piecing with Copic Markers

Michelle Bayliss loves to use her copic markers to color her paper piecing designs. We love what she did with the little "Trick or Treaters" pattern shown here and she was kind enough to do this fabulous tutorial for us to share with you. Thanks Michelle!! We love it and have been playing with our copic markers ever since.

Tutorial using MyScrapChick pattern: Bella & Baxtor Trick or Treaters

1. Cut your pattern pieces and place them in order on top of each other. This will allow you to see which part of the bottom layer you need to colour. On this file I need to colour the spine, back leg and some of the hood around the child face.

2. Once I have my base colour on the bottom layer I always lay the pieces back on top to make sure I have coloured everywhere I need to. You can see on this piece I need to go back and colour under the face. You also need to shape your back leg so be aware not to colour the whole base layer in case it is not needed.

3. Go back to your base layer and add shading. The shading on this piece was done using just one colour. I just edged the spikes on the back for more shading by adding more of the same colour where the leg would be.

4. For the face I use 3 colours. E50, E00, E11. I always start with my lightest colour and colour the whole face in E50. I then edge the side of the face with my next darkest, E00. Then I take my lightest colour again and just drag colour in. By this I mean, I only take the pen from left to right, dragging the darker colour into the lighter and giving a shadow effect. With the darkest colour, E11, I edge the cut edge only. I then repeat the dragging technique. You can repeat this as many times as you want until you are satified with the shading.

5. Glue face into position.

6. Next piece is the body of the costume. Once again I put my lightest colour on first. This is the one time I use the chisel end of the pen. Do not worry if it looks streaky. It does blend as you add colour.

7. Next, either edge the outside edge with a darker colour or use the same colour again. Then do the dragging technique to blend. I find it easier to turn the piece and just go left to right when dragging the colour in. If you want more definition edge the outside cut edge with a darker colour.

8. Glue on costume body.

9. When doing your shading bear in mind creases in arms and legs etc.

10. When you have all you pieces glued into place, you need to think about eyes, cheeks and highlighting. I have not added the hair to this piece as I like it without; it gives more space to put our eye.

11. To do eyes I use a 0.7 Letraset fine line drawing pen. I try a do a little curved d to get the eye, so slightly larger and rounder at the bottom. For cheeks I use either R20 or R00 depending on how much I want them to stand out. Highlighting is again down to personal choice as to how much or how little
you do. I always put a little white dot on the eye and on the cheek.

12. To finish off I glue another base layer to the back of the finished piece. This is to hide where the copic ink has gone through the card. Remember you can always go more in-depth with your colour shading and shade depending on
where the light is coming from.

Altered Composition Book

Hi, My Hi, My name is Tammy Jennings and I have been creating art and making crafts since I was a very small child. A few years ago my Husband saw the Cricut commercial on TV and decided that was what he wanted to get me for Christmas, I was less than thrilled. Until I discovered Sure Cuts A Lot, then I was excited. I asked my Dad to give me SCAL for Christmas and he did, I was able to start downloading free cut files that I found online.

Shortly after Christmas I discovered My Scrap Chick and WOW, it has been a long and happy love affair! I LOVE MSC files, they are so cute and easy to piece and you just have so many options. My Scrap Chick was the first company that I actually purchased a cut file from and since that first purchase I have made many many more. I think my favorite thing about MSC, besides the fact that the files are just so wonderful and creative, is that they really do piece well, rarely do you have to deal with teeny tiny pieces and if you choose to use a stamp for the face or draw your own it is so easy to do that. I also love that I can mix and match different collections and get completely different looks.

Since that Christmas I have amassed a very large collection of MSC cut files, I have upgraded from the Cricut to an 18” Black Cat Cougar to cut with and I have added Make-the-Cut and Signcut software to my arsenal! Kristi's Recipe for Deep Fried PC

Anyone that knows me, knows I am NO cook, or even Suzie home maker for that matter. So if you mention Kristi and deep fried in the same sentence, there must be trouble to follow.

If you are reading this post, chances are you have a computer or access to one. Perhaps you have more than one computer with tons of precious photos of your loved ones, important software that cannot be replaced (like those that have been upgraded not to work with the bug machine) or amazing digital patterns that you have been collecting for years.

Imagine hanging out on your computer as you some times do. You are sitting there, doing what you do when all of the sudden sparks flare from the back of your computer and smoke begins barreling out from the side of the tower. That was my Monday!

What would be the first thing that goes through your mind? I can tell you that after feeling an immediate drop in the pit of my stomach, I praised GOD that I had backed everything up on my portable hard drive. Yes, PRAISE GOD!

Imagine loosing all those years of files I had created, my original designs. But more importantly, all the photos of my little girls, my husband, my family and the precious moments that had been captured digitally. Imagine them gone, all gone!

You see that actually happened to me years ago. I still have the computer, as one day I hope to get my photos off of it. But I learned my lesson.

I want to share this with you, my dear friends, because this has happened to me not once, but twice. The first time I wasn't so lucky, and I do not what that to happen to you.

We at My Scrap Chick are always happy to re-send you a file you may have lost, or deleted by accident. And if by unfortunate circumstance your computer dies....well, we will resend all the files we have on record for you.

We want to do our part to always be there for you if you need us, but no matter how much we love and appreciate you, we cannot replace the other precious content on your computer. So please, please, please....back everything up on another hard rive. It is not worth loosing.

We have 'save the tata's' and 'save the whales', now lets "save our PC" (precious content!!!
